The city has about 380,000 inhabitants and is located in an area consisting of wide plains and gentle hilly areas.<br \/>\nBologna is known for having hosted the <strong>first university in Western Europe<\/strong>, towards the end of XI century. That tradition has always favoured the emergence of cultural and literary activities of great value. Even nowadays it is a favourite destination for students from all over Italy.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calzo1.jpg\" alt=\"calzo1\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><br \/>\nThe <strong>architectural and urban design<\/strong> retains all its <strong>original splendour<\/strong>: palaces and ancient churches are home to valuable works of art that make clear the importance that this city experienced. Between the Old Town there are almost <strong>40 km of arcades<\/strong> that offer visitors beautiful and original shopping itineraries.<br \/>\nToday Bologna has an important and economic production and it is among the most active cities in Italy. Automotive industries as <strong>Ducati and Maserati<\/strong> are strongly rooted in Bologna and also in the automotive and motorcycle field every year there is the Motor Show, one of the most prestigious international exhibitions dedicated to the two and four wheels.<!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/portico1.jpg\" alt=\"portico1\" width=\"240\" height=\"179\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Bologna, a city of arcades, is one of the favourite destinations of tourists, Italians and not, as it still retains the charm of a large city in the past, rich in monuments and works of art.<br \/>\nAmong the many attractions that Bologna offers, there are:<br \/>\nthe <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-859\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torri1.jpg\" alt=\"torri1\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torri1.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torri1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><strong>Piazza Maggiore<\/strong>, the heart of the old city and famous for the beautiful Fountain of Neptune by Giambologna (XVI century), overlooked by the main buildings of the civil and religious life of the city (Basilica di San Petronio, Palazzo del Comune, Palazzo del Podest\u00c3\u00a0 and Palazzo di Re Enzo);<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/fiera1.jpg\" alt=\"fiera1\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" \/><br \/>\nthe <strong>Basilica of San Petronio<\/strong>, built in the XIV century, houses works of the greatest Italian artists of all ages, such as Jacopo della Quercia, Filippino Lippi, Vignola and many others;<br \/>\nthe <strong>Palazzo del Comune<\/strong> is today the site of some important cultural institutions such as the Museo Morandi, where there are the works of the great master donated to the city of Bologna; <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\">the <strong>Palazzo del Podest\u00c3\u00a0<\/strong>, built in the XIII century at the intersection of two roads, is characterized by the Tower dell&#8217;Arengo and the so-called Voltone del Podest\u00c3\u00a0;
