[Carlo Levi]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hps\">So the great\u00c2\u00a0 Italian writer<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Carlo Levi<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0 <span class=\"hps\">describes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\"><a title=\"Enjoy Southern Italy in Matera\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/2239\/enjoy-southern-italy-in-matera\/\"><strong><span class=\"hps\">Matera<\/span><\/strong><\/a> in its memoir<\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"hps\">Christ stopped at Eboli&#8221; <span class=\"st\">giving an account of his exile from 1935-1936<\/span><\/span>. Today the city\u00c2\u00a0 has been freshly nominated as European Capital of Culture for 2019\u00c2\u00a0 together with Plovdiv in Bulgaria, exactly on 17th October 2014. <span class=\"hps\">In response<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to centuries of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">poverty<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and isolation,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Matera<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">has become<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a vibrant<\/span> and\u00c2\u00a0 friendly, <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a culture<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that thrives on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">contemporary events<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and history. And the world knows it.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\">The city <span class=\"hps\">is <\/span><span class=\"hps\">the capital of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">province<\/span>, the second city <span class=\"hps\">of Basilicata<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">less than<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">60,000 inhabitants<\/span><span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The old, splendid core<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the city<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is developed<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on the bank<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ravine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bisects the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">valley<\/span>, known as the<strong> <span class=\"hps\">Gravina di<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"hps\"><strong>Matera<\/strong>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">An amazing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">complex<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of caves <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">natural cavities<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"hps\">dug by men&#8217;s hands<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">small <span class=\"hps\">and interdependent<\/span> buildings<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">leaning against each<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">other<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">made \u00e2\u20ac\u2039\u00e2\u20ac\u2039of the same<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">limestone<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that forms the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">mountains,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">it<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">provides for\u00c2\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the eyes of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">traveller,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">overlooking<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the square of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cathedral<\/span>, an\u00c2\u00a0 <span class=\"hps\">astonishing horizon<\/span><span class=\"hps\">.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">On the opposite side<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">you can see<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the mountain<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">several<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">other caves<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">were inhabited<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by solitary hermits<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\">Matera indeed will strike your imagination.\u00c2\u00a0 Thanks to its the ancient and primitive scenery given by the Sassi, many famous filmmakers came and use the scenario to showcast ancient Jerusalem. Among the others, in 1964 Pier Paolo Pasolini got inspiration for one of its masterpieces, &#8220;Il Vangelo secondo Matteo&#8221; (<i>The Gospel According to St. Matthew<\/i> ) a great spiritual movie. The same happened years later with Mel Gibson and its &#8220;The passion of Christ&#8221; of 2004.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Starting<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">from its periphery<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">characterized by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">surfaces<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">gullies,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Matera is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">different from any<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">other Italian city.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">TIts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">parts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">belongs to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">different eras: the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">oldest is composed by <\/span><span class=\"hps\">the famous &#8220;Sassi<\/span>&#8221; <span class=\"hps\">that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the spur<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the Civita<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">join<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with the Cathedral<\/span>; <span class=\"hps\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">medieval<\/span>-Renaissance <span class=\"hps\">extends along<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">&#8220;the Plan&#8221;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on the edge<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the Sassis<\/span>; <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">finally<\/span>, it comes the new city, <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">elegant<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">districts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">created by the most<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">famous Italian architects<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><strong>The Churces<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hps\">A tour<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">through the narrow streets<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">leads<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">first of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">many beautiful<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">churches,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">many of which are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">underground<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Dominating is\u00c2\u00a0 the town<\/span>&#8216;s Cathedral, <span class=\"hps\">a fine example of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Romanesque<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rose window<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on the facade<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of local stone<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Continuing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">you can<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">see the Church of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">San Pietro Caveoso<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the twelfth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century, built<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">overlooking<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rock<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the same name<\/span>, while the <span class=\"hps\">stone<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">opposite<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">St. Peter<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Barisan<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">which<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">originally dates<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">back to the XI<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century and is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">largely<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">carved out of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">mountain,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and St. Augustine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the late sixteenth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century<\/span>, built on a <span class=\"hps\">rocky crypt<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the twelfth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century.<span class=\"hps\">N<\/span><span class=\"hps\">early 130<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">churches<\/span> are located in Matera, many presenting\u00c2\u00a0 <span class=\"hps\">frescoes<\/span>, altars <span class=\"hps\">and sculptures.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">They are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">partly<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">excavated<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and partly<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">complemented by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">walls<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">or<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">underground<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Most<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of them<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">date back to the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">greek<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Byzantine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Monastic<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">civilizations<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">between the eighth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and thirteenth centuries<\/span>.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Of great interest<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the many<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rock churches<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that are along<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the way;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">some of them<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are now home to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">important exhibitions<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of contemporary art,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">especially in the summer<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">The<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">opposite side<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">village<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">offers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">an equal<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">wealth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">evidence<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and the ability to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">discover<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a pleasant walk:<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">St. Nicholas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">dell&#8217;Ofra<\/span>, Our Lady <span class=\"hps\">of Crosses,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the crypts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Sant<\/span><span class=\"hps atn\">&#8216;<\/span>Eustachio, Our Lady <span class=\"hps\">of Monteverde<\/span>, Our Lady <span class=\"hps\">of the Angels<\/span>, the Madonna <span class=\"hps\">del Giglio<\/span>, Santa Barbara, and beautiful frescoes <span class=\"hps\">of St. Nicholas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the Greeks.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"hps\">Other churches<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">dot the<\/span> inner <span class=\"hps\">fabric of the city<\/span>: <span class=\"hps\">St. John the Baptist<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">of the thirteenth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century, as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">St. Dominic<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">St. Francis of Assisi<\/span>, largely <span class=\"hps\">modified in the course<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of the eighteenth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century, a period<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">which<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">also dates back to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the Church of Purgatory<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">The small church<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Mater<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">belonged to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the Knights<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Malta<\/span>, dating from the <span class=\"hps\">seventeenth century.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The complex<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Santa Chiara,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">however, dates back<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the sixteenth<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">century but was<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">extensively renovated<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">two centuries later<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">The unhappy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">story<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of Conte\u00c2\u00a0<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Tramontano<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">also binds to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">one of the castle<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">he<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">decided to build<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">his rule<\/span>, <span class=\"hps\">and which remained<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">unfinished.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">From the Sassi<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rich natural surroundings<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and history,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">all<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in Matera<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">speaks<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the language of emotions<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and culture<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">who welcome<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">enchant the visitor<\/span><span class=\"hps\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"hps\"><span class=\"hps\">Matera is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rich in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ancient<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">culinary traditions<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">linked<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the history and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">local culture<\/span>. In a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">visit to Matera<\/span> you <span class=\"hps\">cannot miss<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the tasting of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">local products<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">Besides the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">famous<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Matera<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bread<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and wine<\/span>, the city offers <span class=\"hps\">simple food<\/span>,\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"hps\"> good to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">enjoy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in every season.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The advice is class=\"hps\">famous is the<\/span> <strong><span class=\"hps\">Cutturiddu<\/span><\/strong>, <span class=\"hps\">mutton<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cooked in a pan<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with tomatoes, peppers<\/span>, potatoes, onion, <span class=\"hps\">garlic, olive oil<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a pinch of salt<\/span>. <span class=\"hps\">The <\/span>red <strong><span class=\"hps\">fedda<\/span><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 <span class=\"hps\">is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">rather<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a slice of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">grilled<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">bread<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with olive oil and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">salt.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">All<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">these dishes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">match<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">very well<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with the red wine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">DOC<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Matera<\/span>, with its <span class=\"hps\">fruity aroma and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">harmonious,\u00c2\u00a0 round taste<\/span><span class=\"hps\">. <\/span><\/span>Lastly, go and
