The <strong>river Torano<\/strong> runs <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1552\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg651.jpg\" alt=\"eg65\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/>through it, making the surrounding land fertile and productive.<\/p>\n<p>The structure of the modern town of Alife has retained much of the <strong>urban plan of Rome<\/strong>. It is rectangular and the internal roads draw rectangles as well.<\/p>\n<p>There still are the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>walls of the Roman era<\/strong><\/span>, then restored in the Middle Ages. The walls have a length of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">1.9 kilometres<\/span>. Along the walls <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">every 39 meters<\/span> there are <strong>tower<\/strong>s that were designed to strengthen the walls and to allow people a better view on the surroundings.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1550\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gary-Denness-gr.jpg\" alt=\"Gary Denness gr\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gary-Denness-gr.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gary-Denness-gr-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the centre of each of the 4 sides of the walls there are <strong>4 doors<\/strong> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Porta Napoli, Porta Piemonte, Porta Roma and Porta Fiume<\/span>), which allowed access to the city.<\/p>\n<p>In the city centre there was a <strong>square <\/strong>overlooked by the main buildings of the city life and by the shops of merchants.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists have found <strong>many Roman remains<\/strong>: s<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tructures of rich private houses, mosaics, painted walls<\/span> and outside the city\u00c2\u00a0 the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">necropolis<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>amphitheatre <\/strong>has recently been opened to the public. It is located outside the walls, a few steps away from Porta Napoli. It is a very large structure and in fact it is considered <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">one of the largest amphitheatres throughout the Roman worl<\/span>d. Experts have calculated that it could accommodate up to <strong>14,000 spectators.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Criptoportico<\/strong>, an ancient monument with its structure <strong>intact <\/strong>is also particularly interesting.
