{"id":1437,"date":"2009-12-03T15:25:27","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T14:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/?p=1437"},"modified":"2009-12-03T16:14:58","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T15:14:58","slug":"befana-the-sweet-old-lady-of-italian-tradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/1437\/befana-the-sweet-old-lady-of-italian-tradition\/","title":{"rendered":"Befana: the sweet old Lady of Italian Tradition."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1442\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/befana-gr2.jpg\" alt=\"befana gr\" width=\"228\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/befana-gr2.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/befana-gr2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><strong>Befana<\/strong> is an <strong>old lady<\/strong>, who, between the n<strong>ight of January 5th and 6th<\/strong>, brings <strong>sweets<\/strong> to all the children that have been good during the previous year. <strong>Children<\/strong> that have not been so good receive <strong>coal<\/strong> too.<\/p>\n<p>Children traditionally leave a <strong>stocking hanging from the fireplace<\/strong> and the Befana fills them according to the \u201cgoodness\u201d of the child.<\/p>\n<p>The Befana is also famous for her <strong>aquiline nose, <\/strong>her <strong>clothes full of patches, <\/strong>for her <strong>Roman hat <\/strong>and her <strong>broken shoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This tradition comes from an old <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Legend<\/strong><\/span> began many years ago and it sounds like that:<\/p>\n<p>One night the Magi on January 5th set out to go to visit the newborn Jesus. After a few days they got lost and decided to stop and ask for directions.<!--more--> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1441\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze-camino1.jpg\" alt=\"calze camino\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze-camino1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze-camino1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>They knocked on the door of an elderly lady named Befana.<\/p>\n<p>The Magi asked the old lady if she knew the way to go to Jesus and if she could accompany them.<\/p>\n<p>She showed them the way but she refused to accompany them because she had many things to do.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly afterwards, however, the Befana regretted not going with the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze1.jpg\" alt=\"calze\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze1.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/calze1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/>Magi to Bethlehem.<\/p>\n<p>Then she prepared a basket full of candy and left the house in search of Jesus offering sweets to all the children she met on his journey hoping one of them would be Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>The Epiphany, celebrated January 6th is a very special day even for adults. The stockings are very often full of surprises.
