{"id":1077,"date":"2009-09-18T18:34:46","date_gmt":"2009-09-18T17:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/?p=1077"},"modified":"2009-09-18T18:34:46","modified_gmt":"2009-09-18T17:34:46","slug":"the-castle-of-torrechiara-history-love-and-legend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/1077\/the-castle-of-torrechiara-history-love-and-legend\/","title":{"rendered":"The Castle of Torrechiara, history, love and legend."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1078\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara1gr.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara1gr\" width=\"400\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara1gr.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara1gr-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Torrechiara <\/strong>is part of the municipality of Langhirano in the <strong>province of Parma <\/strong>and is known for its imposing <strong>castle<\/strong> <strong>built between 1448 and 1460 by Pier Maria Rossi II<\/strong> (1413-1482), Count of San Secondo.<\/p>\n<p>It is located on the foothills, in an area always remembered for the mild climate and it is surrounded by vineyards, offering a beautiful view towards the valley and the town.<\/p>\n<p>Torrechiara Castle was built in honor of the <strong>Bianca Pellegrini<\/strong>, lover of Pier Maria Rossi, and so it became her luxurious residence.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1080\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara2.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara2\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Castle perfectly preserves its l<strong>ate-medieval squared structure<\/strong> with its four massive towers and crenellated curtain wall. It is accessible via a long covered entrance leading to the courtyard, where there is the little <strong>church of St. Nicomedes<\/strong>, whose front door is studded with the monograms of Bianca e Pier Maria.<\/p>\n<p>Inside there are sevral <strong>beautiful frescoed rooms<\/strong>. The old kitchen, the <strong>room of Jupiter<\/strong>, of Pergolato, of Paesaggi (landscapes), <strong>of Vittoria<\/strong> (victory), of Angeli (angels), <strong>of Velario<\/strong> and of the Stemmi (crests) offer frescoes made by Cesare Baglione during the Sforza period.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1079\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara2gr.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara2gr\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara2gr.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara2gr-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upstairs there are the <strong>rooms of Acrobati<\/strong> (acrobats), decorated by artists from the school of Baglione and Paganino.<\/p>\n<p>Particular attention deserves the <strong>Camera d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Oro<\/strong> (golden room), whose name comes from the leaves of gold that once covered the panels on the walls.<br \/>\nThe room still has a rare cycle of frescoes attributed to Benedetto Bembo depicting scenes of celebration of chivalric love referred to Bianca and Pier Maria.<\/p>\n<p>It is still possible to recognize the crests of the two lovers, two hearts with the phrases <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Digne et in aeternum\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/strong>(worthy and ever) and <strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Nunc et Semper\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong> (now and forever), demonstrating the eternity of their love.<br \/>\nThe golden room overlooks a large portico built at the end of the XV century, when the castle lost its original military functions and became house.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <strong>legend<\/strong> saying that in the castle during the nights of full moon, when the mist envelops the castle, it appears the ghost of a beautiful duchess, walled up by her husband, wandering into the tower of the manor offering passionate kisses to men on her way!!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1081\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara4.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara4\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Castle was hit by the earthquake in December 2008 and part of it is currently in the process of securing and restoration of the frescoes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>OPENING HOURS <\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nFrom 25 August to 31 October: Tuesday to Friday from 9.00 to 19.00\u00c2\u00a0 and Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 19.00.<br \/>\nFrom 1 November 2009 to February 28, 2010: Tuesday to Friday from 9.00 to 17.00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 17.00.<br \/>\n<strong>Closed<\/strong>: Monday<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/holidays-in-emilia-romagna\/bologna-area\/city-of-bologna\/hotels\/\">Where to sleep.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1082\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara1.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara1\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1083\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/torrechiara5.jpg\" alt=\"torrechiara5\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The castle fo Torrechiara in Emilia Romagna is certainly the most spectacular, more structured and more frequented castle in the province of Parma, and it is also a venue for summer shows.
