{"id":1063,"date":"2009-09-14T09:58:43","date_gmt":"2009-09-14T08:58:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/?p=1063"},"modified":"2009-09-14T10:03:11","modified_gmt":"2009-09-14T09:03:11","slug":"segeste-the-greek-presence-in-sicily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/1063\/segeste-the-greek-presence-in-sicily\/","title":{"rendered":"Segeste, the Greek presence in Sicily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1064\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta2gr.jpg\" alt=\"segesta2gr\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta2gr.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta2gr-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Segesta <\/strong>is a no longer inhabited historic city, founded by the Elimi and located in the north-west of Sicily.<\/p>\n<p>The old city is located on Mount Barbaro, in the municipality of Calatafimi, about ten miles away from Alcamo and Castellammare del Golfo.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Archaeological Park <\/strong>is situated in a wonderful location among ocher-colored and red-brown hills, forming a pleasant contrast with the infinite shades of green and it is dominated by the bulk of the <strong>Doric temple.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1065\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta1.jpg\" alt=\"segesta1\" width=\"240\" height=\"156\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The old Segesta, probably founded by the Elimi, as well as the town of Erice, soon became one of the major cities of the Mediterranean area under Hellenistic influence and in the V century it was the biggest rival of Selinus.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular beauty are the temple in Doric style, and the theatre, partly dug into the rock of the hill.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>temple of Segesta<\/strong>, one of the most perfect to survive from Antiquity, stands in majestic solitude on a hill surrounded by a deep valley framed by Monte Bernardo and Monte Barbaro where the theatre is located. It was erected in <strong>430 BC <\/strong>in elegant Doric proportions of rare harmony.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1066\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta7gr.jpg\" alt=\"segesta7gr\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta7gr.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/segesta7gr-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The peristyle is almost completely intact with its <strong>36 columns <\/strong>in magnificent limestone of a golden hue and without grooves.<\/p>\n<p>This fact and the lack of the internal cell created the suggestion that the building had never been finished. Its destination is also a mystery, as it has not been found any evidence that could indicate which divinity was dedicated to.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>theatre<\/strong> was built in the <strong>III century BC <\/strong>in the Hellenistic period, but under the Roman domination.
