{"id":1058,"date":"2009-09-12T16:59:14","date_gmt":"2009-09-12T15:59:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/?p=1058"},"modified":"2010-07-21T15:29:30","modified_gmt":"2010-07-21T14:29:30","slug":"villa-hambury-the-botanical-gardens-unique-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/1058\/villa-hambury-the-botanical-gardens-unique-in-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Villa Hanbury: the Botanical Gardens unique in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1059\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury1gr.jpg\" alt=\"hambury1gr\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury1gr.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury1gr-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The naturalistic passion of an English man and his wife created the <strong>Hanbury Botanical Gardens <\/strong>since 1867 <strong>near Ventimiglia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This botanical gardens were thought for the acclimatization of plants coming from many different countries of the world, exploiting the good position of the area and the peculiarly mild climate.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the cooperation of mostly foreigners botanists, agronomists and landscape experts, it was created an enormous complex unique in the whole Europe from both points of view the botanical one, with <strong>5800 species of ornamental plants, herbs and fruit,<\/strong> and that landscape one, thanks to the happy compositional harmony between buildings, ornamental and cultivated terraces.<\/p>\n<p>The gardens were built from 1867, thanks to the passion of the English explorer <strong>Sir Thomas Hanbury<\/strong>. He had made his fortune as an exporter of tea in Shanghai and after he decided to settle on the Ligurian coast, and firstly bought the palace of the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1062\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury2.jpg\" alt=\"hambury2\" width=\"207\" height=\"240\" \/>Marquis Orengo of Ventimiglia, still existing, and then the surrounding land, on which he wanted to make a wonderful garden with botanical specimens collected all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>To develop the project he was helped by his brother Daniel, by several botanists (including, in particular, Ludwig and Winter Alwin Berger) and by unskilled gardeners living nearby. The garden soon became known around the world.<br \/>\nWhen Sir Thomas died, his son Cecil and his wife Lady Dorothy carried on the work until the Second World War, when the site was abandoned.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1060\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury5.gif\" alt=\"hambury5\" width=\"400\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury5.gif 400w, https:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury5-300x150.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1960 the Italian State purchased the garden from the heirs. In 1962 it was entrusted to the International Institute of Ligurian Studies. In 1987 the management was entrusted permanently at the <strong>University of Genoa. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The area of garden, about <strong>18 hectares<\/strong>, is partly cultivated with <strong>exotic plants <\/strong>and in part with the <strong>Mediterranean scrub<\/strong>, offering a rare example of this type of vegetation, completely free of any human influence.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1061\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/hambury3.jpg\" alt=\"hambury3\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nowadays a group of people of different nationalities particularly sensitive to the beauty of nature has formed an association, the <strong>Friends of the Botanic Gardens Hanbury<\/strong>, with the intent of hepling the maintenance of such a beautiful place.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Getting There<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Car <\/strong><br \/>\nHighway A10 Genoa \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Ventimiglia; Ventimiglia exit.
