It became a <strong>Roman<\/strong> town and disappears in the VI century. It was conquered and lost several times by the <strong>Byzantines<\/strong> and the <strong>Goths<\/strong>, to be later occupied by the <strong>Lombards<\/strong>. Then it entered in the <strong>Papal States <\/strong>until the unification of Italy.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1045\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/orvieto10.jpg\" alt=\"orvieto10\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The profile of the <strong>Dome<\/strong>, symbol of the city all over the world, emerges from a distance and it is like suggesting to leave the car to walk towards the fortress. That\u2019s also why the town of Orvieto has restored an old <strong>funicular railway<\/strong> connecting the train to Orvieto&#8217;s old town. But a large <strong>covered car park<\/strong> is also available in Campo della Fiera, with an efficient system of <strong>escalators and lifts<\/strong> on tufa rocks leading to the medieval quarter, and served by <strong>comfortable minibuses<\/strong> for fast connections.<\/p>\n<p>To appreciate the unique panorama, it is worth climbing on top of the XIII century <strong>Torre del Moro<\/strong>, the highest point and central area of the town, where the sight embraces the green landscape surrounding the whole town.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1046\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/orvieto2gr.jpg\" alt=\"orvieto2gr\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/>The heart of the city of Orvieto is <strong>Piazza del Duomo<\/strong> with ancient palaces and Cathedral with its wonderful facade.<br \/>\nAt the corner with Via del Duomo it is visible the <strong>tower with automaton<\/strong> that chimed with his beats the time of the centuries-old site of the factory.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of the city of Orvieto is also enriched by the two important E<strong>truscan necropolis <\/strong>located at the base of the cliff [necropolis of the Crucifisso del Tufo &#8211; Loc San Martino &#8211; Orvieto Scalo], and by the <strong>underground part of the city<\/strong>.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1047\" src=\"http:\/\/www.crossingitaly.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/orvieto1.jpg\" alt=\"orvieto1\" width=\"300\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The latter was enlarged during the Middle Ages for different purposes: the creation of reservoirs and refuges for the breeding of pigeons, so to become a true city dug into the mountain.
