Eating Well in Italy

Posted by internetauthor on August 6th, 2010 — in Italy

eating

There’s a good reason Italian food is loved the world over. It’s delicious and when in Italy, you can expect some fine meals. Often these meals come with fine price tags as well, but eating in Italy can be worth every penny if you know a few tricks of the trade.

Eating Cheaply
When you’re trying to eat well for less, don’t sit down. There are additional service charges added to your meal beyond the normal tip you’re familiar with when you sit. The service charges can be high as can the bread and seating charges. Instead of taking a seat, simply eat standing at the bar or order your food to go. Take it back to your hotel room to eat or stop and eat it as a picnic in the first piazza you come to with a nice view. (more…)

While we’d all love to splash money all over Europe, traveling often costs more than we’d like to spend. Fortunately, you can do Italy on the cheap by taking advantages of many of the specials available to travelers and some local accommodations and transportation options.

Travel Off Season
The peak tourist season in Italy is April through August. The earlier in these peak months you go, the less crowded it will be, but to get the most for less, travel in September through March. The weather will be cooler and there might be more rain, but in some cases, price are halved – especially on accommodations. You’re also able to see more thanks to fewer tourists and shorter lines. The Best Times to Travel to Italy

Posted by internetauthor on July 23rd, 2010 — in Italy

rain

As much as we’d love to think that every day is a good day to visit Italy, there are definitely some days that are better than others. The best days for a general visit to Italy are in the spring – April through June. These early months are warm without being overwhelmingly hot. Of course if you’re planning a trip to Italy to do a bit more than just peek in the famous museums, you’ll want to plan accordingly for that.

The Best Overall Time for Italy
The spring is a lush time in Italy. The snow is melting in the Alps, the fields of Tuscany are covered in greenery and wildflowers and the weather is agreeable. There might still be bouts of rain from time to time, but the temperatures are easy to deal with – bring along a light rain jacket for warmth and protection as you need it in the major cities and you’ll be fine. The Pantheon: A Great Reminder of Roman Prestige

Posted by internetauthor on July 16th, 2010 — in Italy

pantheon

Built 1800 years ago, the Pantheon is one of the most impressive reminders in Rome today of the grandeur of ancient Rome. Originally built as a temple for pagan gods by Agrippa in 27BC, the Pantheon was converted to a church in AD 609. Today it is open for visitors and contains the remains of the famous artist Raphael who died at age 37 in 1520 as well as the first King over a unified Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II who died in 1878. While the structure is impressive, it is the history that accompanies the building that brings it to life for visitors today.

The Pantheon’s Impressive Nature
The Pantheon is impressive. Thick brick walls and large marble columns are stately. The huge bronze doors open into the Pantheon, but the most impressive feature is the dome. A stately dome sits atop the building at an impressive 43 meters in height. This is especially outstanding when you consider the dome was the largest in the world until 1436 – almost 1500 years of dominance in architecture. (more…)

Traveling Italy by Train

There are many ways to make your way around Italy, and one of the best, fastest and easiest is to travel by train. The train routes in Italy let you move from one major city to the next without hassles, especially once you learn how to use the ticket windows and have gone through the process a time or two. If you’re looking for a way to enjoy the major cities without the headaches of a car rental, consider travel by train.

Train Options
There are a few different trains that run through Italy. The Eurostar (ES or Treni Eurostar Italia) is the fastest and premier train that moves only between major cities. Seat reservations are mandatory on the trains and it will move you quickly between cities in comfort. The Intercity and Intercity Plus trains have first and second class and also require seat reservations. The first class seats are less crowded and the train moves quickly between major cities throughout all of Italy. The Regionale trains are smaller, local trains that move between virtually all cities working around work and school schedules. These trains can become especially crowded at “rush hour” and most only have second class seats, but are the least expensive option as well. (more…)
