From a tourism point of view the area of Parma is full of monuments mainly related to the old medieval states or to the Napoleonic period.
In the plain there are: the Villa Pallavicino, the ancient fortress of Busseto and the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi in Roncole Verdi.
Fidenza (formerly Borgo San Donnino), which boasts a Romanesque cathedral, very similar to tho one of Parma, the Convent of Fontevivo and the center of Salsomaggiore Terme are also very important.
In the mountain areas there are mostly defensive medieval castle. The most important are the Castle of Bardi, Compiano Castle and the Castle of Torrechiara, but there are also the Noceto, Felino, Sala Baganza, Varano de’ Melegari strongholds and the castles of Tabiano Castello and Scipione Castello near Salsomaggiore Terme.
